Important Features to Consider

Before we dig in to the reviews, let’s discuss some of the features you may find in pop up canopy tents and what to look for.

Many people will not only have different needs regarding a pop up canopy, but they’ll have different criteria for choosing the best one. Some may not care about the quality or style, but simply want a specific color. Others may be looking for the sturdiest design, or the one that weighs the less. And then there are those who are on a strict budget and are just trying to find the vest value for the money.

Whatever your criteria, the points we discuss below should help you make an informed decision regarding which pop up canopy tent is the best for you.

In addition to the features mentioned below, you also want to consider the price and what your budget looks like. If you don’t have a lot to spend on a structure, factor that into your decision as you look through the list of products we’ve provided below.

Ease of Setup and Materials

While the whole idea of a pop-up canopy is for the setup to be easy, some are going to be easier than others. It all depends on the materials used and if you have extra accessories to attach, like walls or weights.

Most canopy covers are made from either polyester or vinyl. If you need something waterproof, make sure that the cover has been treated with some sort of polyurethane lining. Un-treated canopy covers may be cheaper, but they won’t protect your guests or items from any rain, and self-treating is difficult and doesn’t always work.

You’ll often find the frames to be made from either aluminum or steel. The frame material you end up with, if you do your research, largely depends on what you need the canopy for and whether you need it to be as lightweight as possible. Aluminum and plastic, for instance, may be cheaper and more lightweight, but won’t be as sturdy in windy conditions. Steel will provide you with a much more secure frame but is heavy and often more expensive.

Make sure if you choose any type of metal frame that it’s treated against oxidation, so rust doesn’t form. Stainless steel is your best option to avoid rust, but anything will work if it’s treated properly.

Regarding the canopy material, another feature to consider is denier, which is the measurement of how thick the material is. This is measured by taking any a single, 9,000-meter length of any given thread (no matter the material) and weigh it. Whatever the weight of that thread is, that’s the denier of that specific material.

The denier of most tents (noted with a lower or uppercase “d”) will range from about 200-600 or more. What does this mean for you as you’re shopping for a canopy tent? Usually, the lower the denier, the more lightweight the material is. Likewise, the higher the number, the heavier the material.

Slanted or Straight Legs

Pop up canopies come in two basic leg designs: slanted leg or straight legs. The leg style you choose to go with depends on what you need it for, the location you’ll be setting up, and how rough the terrain is.

Straight leg canopies offer a clean, professional look and are much sturdier than tents with slanted legs. The canopy fabric tends to be much sturdier as well. The downside to straight leg canopy tents is they tend to cost more, and they’ll be much heavier. Even so, once in place they are relatively easy to manipulate and move.

Slant leg canopies, on the other hand, are great for camping trips and beach parties, as they’ll be easier to set up on rough or uneven terrain. They’re also much lighter and portable and are generally cheaper than their straight leg cousins. The downside for these, though, is that the canopy fabric is usually as quality-made and can be prone to early wear and tear, especially if used a lot.

If you’re headed somewhere windy, or if the weather suddenly changes to rainy on the day of your event or trip, you may want to have a pop-up canopy that has sidewalls. A pop up canopy with sides are also excellent for keeping the early or late sun from coming into your tented area through the sides.

Some designs will have permanent walls, making the canopy gazebo-style, which are great for wedding receptions or fancy parties. These sidewalls will usually have windows on them, and you’ll have full range of the space provided for tables, chairs, and food. Set up some lights inside for a nice evening party.

Other models are much more versatile, featuring removable walls. Whether or not you use the sidewalls depends on the event as well as the weather conditions.

If you get a canopy that doesn’t come with sidewalls, and you discover later that you need them, there are various styles of sidewalls that you can order separately. However, that would make your overall tent cost much more, so you if you can afford the initial cost, it may be better to get a canopy with detachable walls.

Pop-up Functionality

Pop up canopies aren’t for just one purpose; the functionality varies. You can use a pop-up canopy for any outdoor event or purpose you can think of.

Whether you’re headed to the beach or want to spend some time out in your backyard or garden, a pop-up tent can be a great way to get some much-needed shade from the sun’s harmful rays. Although Vitamin D is essential for health and energy, too much sun can cause sunburn or even skin cancer.

Many times, when someone goes to the beach, it may be the heat they desire, or the sounds and smell of the ocean, but they don’t want all the sun that comes with it. Also, if you’re planning a beach party, a canopy tent can offer guests a shady spot to hang out and stay cool, while also shielding any food you have from the sand and sun.

If you’re hosting a private event, a pop-up canopy, complete with sidewalls, is a great place to have your event outside while keeping out unwelcome visitors. Also, if you and your spouse have decided to have a backyard date, or you want to spend some time reading outside, a little privacy can keep nosy neighbors from being in your business.

Portable Garage

Don’t have a garage or carport on your property and can’t afford to have one built? Just get a pop up tent canopy! They’ve recently become a great choice for portable garages or car ports, shielding your car from the sun, rain, or even pollen. Some manufactures have styles specifically designed to be used as a temporary garage for storage purposes, or for any of your vehicles (car, motorcycle, boat, etc.) Some can even work well as horse shelters.

Sturdy Construction

No matter what your need is for a pop up canopy, you’re going to want one that’s sturdy and made from durable materials. The canopy should be made of materials that won’t rip or tear easily, and the frame should be strong and rust-resistant.

Most canopies are made with hollow aluminum, which are sturdy enough, but can weaken and bend over time or with vigorous use. If you need something that’s much studier, steel will be the way to go. Keep in mind, though, that steel is a good deal heavier than aluminum and not as easy to transport or carry.

Screens and UV Protection

Due to the likelihood of your pop up canopy spending a lot of time in the sun, depending on what you need it for, you should make sure that it has excellent UV protection. Not only will it protect yourself, anyone else using the shelter, or any items you have stored underneath, but proper UV protection will also keep the canopy from fading or deteriorating too soon.

Weights are excellent accessories to have for your tent. The weather might suddenly change, bringing strong winds that weren’t in the forecast. Or you may be using your pop up on uneven ground and want to weigh it down for a little piece of mind.

Some tent manufacturers will make weights that go with a specific tent they sell, sometimes bundling the weights in with the tent itself. But you can use anything to weigh down your pop-up canopy tent.

The downside to weights is since they’re designed to weigh down the tent, they can be heavy to carry. One suggestion for that is to get empty weights that you either fill with water or sand. They’re easy to carry around, and you only fill them when you need to use them.

If your plans for your canopy has it staying in one place for a long period of time, like in your backyard or as a carport, you may want weights that are made for your canopy or ones that are designed to attach to the bottom of the tent legs. If you travel a lot with your pop up, the fillable ones would be a good option since they travel better.

Who Should Buy a Pop-up Canopy Tent?

Anyone who needs a portable shelter that’s inexpensive and easy to set up and take down should buy a pop-up canopy tent. Standard pole shelters are cumbersome and may take a good deal of time to set up, usually between 30-45 minutes, or longer. And it often will take several people to get it all done.

An instant pop up tent, however, won’t take that long, and will generally be just as easy to take down and put away after the event is over.

Pop-up canopy tents are great options for anything that requires temporary shelter from sun and mild winds, which is what makes it so great for market stalls, vendor booths, or picnics.

Sidewalls Vs. No Sidewalls

Some pop ups do not come with sidewalls included. There is only a cover available. A covered tent still provides protection from the sun’s harmful rays and the rain, and will work fine if it is all you have. Adding sidewalls is typically ideal for windier days when more protection is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a canopy tent?

An instant canopy tent is a temporary shelter that opens accordion-style and they don’t require staking or tent poles. They’re usually open on all four sides, but many come with sidewalls for added privacy or shelter.

Canopy tents are also super easy to set up, and usually cost a lot less than frame tents or standard pole tents. The only downside is they may not be as sturdy as other tents, but there are heavy duty ones available. Additionally, there are ways to prolong the life of your instant canopy.

The beauty of popups is that the main frame is already assembled, which eliminates the bulk of a tent set up. All you have to do is pull it out of the case or bag and unfold it. Then the next step is putting the top cover and/or the side walls on. If your event is only a couple of hours long, you don’t want to be arriving 2 hours ahead of time just to put your tent up. A pop-up canopy tent can go up in as little as ten minutes, depending on how heavy-duty it is.

What are canopy tents used for?

Canopy tents are used for anything. They’re generally perfect for market or vendor booths, beach parties, wedding receptions, or camping trips with your buddies. But they can also be used for picnics, barbeques, private concerts, storage, or as a temporary garage or carport.

How many tables and chairs can fit under a 10 x 20 canopy tent?

How many tables and chairs fit under a 10x20 canopy depends largely on what type of event you’re hosting with it and what types of tables you’re using.

If your event is cocktail style with no tables, you could easily fit about 32-40 chairs. If you have 8’ rectangle tables, you’ll be able to fit 3 tables and 24 chairs. 60” round tables, however, will fit 2 under the tent, fitting about 16-20 chairs.

Again, it all depends on what you’re using it for. If you need your tent for a vendor set-up, you might be able to fit two or three tables along the “walls” and have just enough room for a few chairs and for people to walk through to look at your products or what services you offer.

How do you secure a canopy tent?
